Three Charged, 23 Tickets Issued In Putnam DWI Detail

Three individuals have been charged and 23 tickets were issued in a DWI detail in Putnam.

New York State Police conducted a DWI safety checkpoint detail in the town of Southeast on the evening of Friday, May 3.

This detail was executed in an ongoing effort by law enforcement agencies to ensure highway safety for all roadway users.

As a result of the detail, three DWI arrests were made and 23 traffic tickets were written, including two for speeding.

The detail also resulted in the arrest of 39-year-old Putnam resident with numerous suspensions on his license who police say was caught with heroin.

Police say John Thorpe Jr. of Southeast was traveling on Danbury Road when he was pulled over for a traffic violation.

Prior to stopping, police say Thorpe was observed throwing something out his car window, later identified as approximately 14 grams of heroin.

Further investigation also revealed that Thorpe had seven suspensions on his license, according to police.

Thorpe was charged with the following:

  • Tampering with evidence, a Class E felony
  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor
  • Second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor

Thorpe was ticketed and is scheduled to return to the town of Southeast Court on Thursday, May 23.
